WHO ARE THE SULLIVAN BROTHERS?

"I just spoke to Kelly Sullivan Loughren, and she found out over the weekend that a team of runners from the Naval ship USS The Sullivans is being sent to run the Five Sullivan Brothers Veterans Memorial 5K & 10K races on November 4. They will be carrying a flag or banner from the ship and running the race in cadence. I thought that this additional support and the backing of the Sullivan ship was a really unique aspect of the race that will make for a cool experience for runners and for volunteers helping out."

The Five Sullivan Brothers of Waterloo were serving together aboard the light cruiser USS Juneau during World War II. TheJuneau was engaged with Japanese warships in the battle for Guadalcanal. Ultimately, the Juneau was sunk after being hit by torpedoes fired by a pair of Japanese submarines. All five brothers perished as a result. The brothers are now a large part of Waterloo and United States history and their supreme sacrifice will never be forgotten. Millions of American men and women have served our country and many have sacrificed their lives, just as the Sullivan Brothers did. Those who served and returned home also sacrificed much to ensure the freedom of our country and our rights and liberties.

The Five Sullivan Brothers Veterans 5K/10K is intended as a memorial for those, like the Sullivan Brothers, who gave their lives in service of our country and a celebration of the veterans who served their country and returned home. We recognize veterans who served so courageously in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard and their comrades who lost their lives while serving alongside their fellow soldiers.

A portion of the proceeds from the Five Sullivan Brothers Veterans 5K/10K will benefit the Sullivan Foundation; dedicated to recognizing the contributions of the courageous men and women who have protected our borders and guaranteed our freedoms all around the world.
